Nolan Schaefer (born January 15 20th, 1981) is an Canadian professional goalie for ice hockey. currently an unrestricted free-agent who was last contracted with HC Ambri-Piotta of the Swiss National League A (NLA).

Schaefer had his debut NHL debut with the Sharks when he was called to replace injury-stricken Vesa Toskala on Oct. 26 the 26th of October, 2005. He played in 7 games total during the season, registering five wins. In that time, Schaefer became the very first Sharks goalie to win an award in a shootout. This procedure was introduced in the NHL in the season in the 2005-06 season. Schaefer was then moved back and forth between San Jose and Cleveland serving as the Sharks third-string goalie.

On February 27, 2007, he was traded to the Pittsburgh Penguins for a 2007 late-round draft pick. On July 3, 2007, Schaefer signed with the Minnesota Wild as a free agent. After two years with the Wild’s minor league affiliate, the Houston Aeros, Nolan signed for Kontinental Hockey League club HC CSKA Moscow on August 5, 2009, for the 2009–10 season.

Schaefer returned to North America the following season, signing a one-year deal with the Boston Bruins on July 5, 2010. He was placed on waivers by Boston on October 11 to make room for Brian McGrattan. He cleared waivers and was assigned to the AHL’s Providence Bruins.

Schaefer signed the contract to San Jose on August 19 2003. He played three seasons for his Sharks’ AHL affiliate Cleveland Barons (The Barons moved to Worcester, Massachusetts and changed their name as the Sharks in the year 2006). In August of 2005 Schaefer was renewed on an one-year deal as an unrestricted free agent by San Jose.
