Noam Nisan (Hebrew called nm Nysn born on 20 June 1961) is an Israeli computer scientist and a instructor of computing science at Hebrew University of Jerusalem. He is well-known for his research on computational complexity theory as well as the algorithmic theory of games.
He was awarded the Knuth Prize in 2016 “for fundamental and lasting contributions to theoretical computer science in areas including communication complexity, pseudorandom number generators, interactive proofs, and algorithmic game theory”.
Nisan was awarded Nisan was awarded an ACM Distinguished Dissertation Award for his Ph.D. thesis, on pseudorandom number generators. He won the Michael Bruno Memorial Award in 2004. In 2012, he received the Godel Prize, shared with five other awardees for his work alongside Amir Ronen in which he invented the term “algorithmic mechanism design” and demonstrated numerous examples of this kind of issue in computer science.

Nisan studied his undergraduate degree at Hebrew University, graduating in 1984. He then attended at the University of California, Berkeley for graduate school and was awarded an Ph.D. at the age of 28 under the guidance under the direction of Richard Karp. After completing postdoctoral studies with The Massachusetts Institute of Technology he joined the Hebrew University faculty in 1990.
Nisan was the co-author of Using Hard Problems to Create Pseudorandom Generators (MIT Press, ACM Distinguished Dissertation Series 1992) He is also co-author along alongside Eyal Kushilevitz on the publication Communication Complexity (Cambridge University Press 1997) and co-author together with Shimon Schocken in The Elements of Computing Systems Building a Modern Computer from First Principles (The MIT Press, 2005). In 2007, he edited The publication Algorithmic Game Theory (Cambridge University Press 2007).
In 2018 he won the Rothschild Prize and the EATCS Award for “his decisive influence on a range of areas in computational complexity theory and for algorithmic mechanism design, an elegant and rigorous computational theory that aptly informs economics”.
