The 2018-19 campaign, the final season for SKA, Gusev posted a record-setting and league-leading score of 82 points. He also led his team in the KHL by assisting 65 times. Gusev continued his dominance offensively during the playoffs, contributing 19 points over 18 games prior to suffering an in- conference final loss for the second time in a row in the final against CSKA Moscow. In nine seasons of the KHL, Gusev is 10th all-time in scoring 332 points over 391 games.
On 14 April 2019, Gusev signed a one-year, entry-level contract with the Vegas Golden Knights, instantly joining the club in the midst of their first round playoff series against the San Jose Sharks.

On June 21, 2017, following being selected Jason Garrison by the Vegas Golden Knights in the 2017 NHL Expansion Draft, the Knights were granted by the Tampa Bay Lightning the rights to Gusev as well as an option to select him in the second round of the 2017 NHL Entry Draft and a fourth-round selection from the 2018 NHL Entry Draft.
On the 14th of July, 2017 Gusev signed an extension of his contract for two years with Kontinental Hockey League (KHL) powerful team SKA Saint Petersburg.
On 29 July 2019, Gusev as a restricted free agent was traded by the Golden Knights to the New Jersey Devils in exchange for a third-round pick in 2020 and a second-round pick in the 2021 NHL Entry Draft. He immediately agreed to terms with the Devils on a two-year, $9 million contract with an average annual value of $4,500,000.
