Niira Radia (nee Nira Menon) was born on the 19th of November, 1960, in Nairobi, Kenya into a Punjabi family. In the 1970s , the family relocated from Nairobi to London where she was a student at Haberdashers Aske’s School for Girls and then The University of Warwick. In 1981 she was married to Janak Radia, a Gujarati businessman with whom she had three sons. In 1994 the Radias separated and Niira relocated in India as a person who was of Indian Origin. Following an advice from a Numerologist she added a word to her name to create “Niira”.

In 1995, Radia hired a space located in Vasant Vihar, Delhi. She was employed by the Sahara Group in New Delhi, India as an aviation consultant. As an officer of liaison, Radia used her expertise in the fields of aviation, travel as well as government policies and also the Foreign Investment Promotion Board to solve Sahara Airlines’ issues with the commercial department at Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi. In the course of these discussions, Radia met Rao Dheeraj Singh who is a traffic supervisor for Sahara Airlines, and grandson of the former Haryana chief minister Rao Birender Singh.

In 1994, the father of Radia’s, Iqbal Menon had a meeting with an advisor of Sahara Airlines at a party in London who told him the airline was planning at leasing Boeing 737-4 aircrafts to increase the size of the company’s operations. Menon had been involved with Radia’s plane leasing business, arranged for Radia the plane to New Delhi, India to meet Sahara Airlines CEO, Uttam Kumar Bose. Radia assisted Sahara reach an agreement through International Lease Finance Corporation, an Los Angeles based company, to lease two Boeing 737-400 planes as well as spare parts.
