Plocki is an all-American athlete who competed on the balance beam of University of Alabama. Plocki began coaching as an assistant to a graduate student for West Virginia University while studying for an advanced master’s degree. Plocki was a candidate for an open coaching position in the University of Michigan at age 23 and was offered the position. In her first year as the head coach at University of Michigan, the gymnastics team for women was at the bottom of their game with a score of 0-13, having placed last within the league in 1989 after having recorded a 1-10 mark in 1988. The Michigan gymnasts improved their record to 7-15 during Plocki’s first year. Plocki’s re-conversion into the Michigan gymnastics team received significant boost after she succeeded in bringing Toledo, Ohio, native Beth Wymer to Michigan. In securing Wymer, Plocki told her: “You can go to one of the three dominant schools (Utah, Georgia or Alabama) and be another All-America on their list of All-Americas. Or, you can come to Michigan and be the first All-America.” Since since then, Plocki has had All-Americans each year. Plocki credits Wymer credit for her role in helping create the Michigan gymnastics team: “I don’t know where we would be today if she hadn’t made the decision to come to Michigan. Her being here allowed us to recruit a completely different level of athlete. It is monumental what she did for this program.” The year 2001 was the time Plocki secured another high-profile blue-chip new recruit by securing Elise Ray, captain of the 2000 U.S. Olympic gymnastics team made a decision to join Michigan.
