He is a Scottish player who was a former professional footballer and played over 300 matches as a midfielder for the Football League. From 2004 to 2006 Quashie played for Scotland as the nation of his father at the highest level of international competition at 14 times.
Quashie was signed by Portsmouth on August 20, 2000, for a cost that could reach PS600,000 signing a contract for three years. He soon made himself a part of the first team, having 37 appearances in the league and cup during the 2001-02 season, during which Portsmouth ended up in the bottom half in the First Division. He added 44 appearances during the 2002-03 season, and was captain of the club during the time that Portsmouth were awarded their First Division championship and were elevated into the Premier League. When he was returning from a six-week absence due to knee injuries in December 2003 when his knee was injured. his knee opposite, which forced him to miss another one- and-a half weeks in the 2003-04 campaign. He started his career at the age of London as a player at Queens Park Rangers in August 1995. He made his League debut with a defeat of 2-1 against Manchester United at Old Trafford just a few months later, on December 15, 1995. The player was not used regularly for the remainder of the season and made just 11 appearances when QPR were dropped to into the Premier League at the end of the 1995-96 season. He also made 13 appearances during the 1996-97 campaign before entering the first eleven regularly during the 1997-98 season, where he made 34 appearances in cup and league matches.
Quashie was signed by Premier League side Nottingham Forest for PS2.5 million at the beginning of the 1998-99 campaign, but only played 18 games during the time that Forest were easily relegated. Quashie was a regular in the squad in the 1999-2000 campaign, making 34 appearances, but was transferred named by the manager David Platt, at the conclusion of a poor season in which Forest fell short of the promotion spots. In July, he had been attracting interest from various clubs such as West Bromwich Albion and Birmingham City with Portsmouth believed to have offered.
Quashie switched his allegiance to Scotland and made his international debut against Estonia in May 2004. Quashie thus became only the second black player to represent Scotland (after Andrew Watson in 1881) and the third non white person (after Paul Wilson in 1975). He scored in his second game, a 4–1 win over Trinidad and Tobago, a few days later. Berti Vogts said of him, “Nigel is a fantastic player and a real leader on the pitch. He feels so Scottish and that’s great.” In total Quashie made 14 appearances for Scotland, scoring one goal.
