Following Flyers Stanley Cup goaltender Michael Leighton was dismissed and was sent for the Adirondack Phantoms on January 4 2011 the blockade in the area saw Riopel return to Greenville.

On September 16, 2015, Riopel returned to North America in signing a one-year ECHL contract with the Rapid City Rush. He was winless in two games to start the 2015–16 season before he was released by the Rush. On November 6, 2015, he remained in the league after he was signed by the Norfolk Admirals. Riopel appeared in 32 games with the Admirals, and after a string of impressive performances was signed by the Syracuse Crunch to end the year on March 4, 2016.

Although failing to feature in a game with the Crunch, in the off-season on August 22, 2016, Riopel was signed to a one-year deal to remain in the AHL with the Syracuse Crunch.

Since Riopel was not signing an entry-level contract until June 1st in 2011, the Flyers do not have his NHL rights. He signed an agreement for an ECHL team called the Greenville Road Warriors in the summer of 2011.

Riopel started his professional career as a junior with his team the Moncton Wildcats in 2005-06, participating in 5 games. He played with the more experienced Jhase Sniderman for his first season in 2006-07 before moving to the lead role in 2007-08. The third time he played for the Wildcats, Riopel emerged with an impressive record-setting, award-winning season. Alongside the 43 wins he won, which assisted Moncton to win an Atlantic Division title, and .930 save percentage, he also set the league record for goals against average with a 2.01 GAA, which was more than Martin Houle of the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles previous record of 2.32 which was established in 2003-2004. Riopel was recognized with his Jacques Plante Memorial Trophy to have the lowest GAA within the division as well as the Michel Briere Memorial Award for player of the year. He was selected in the 5th round the 142nd overall selection from the 2009 NHL Entry Draft by the Philadelphia Flyers.

Riopel began the 2009-2010 campaign with a place in Training camp for the Flyers the top AHL affiliate named The Adirondack Phantoms. After registering a 46-0 record with an average of 3.35 GAA and a 0.893 save percentage during back-up duties for Johan Backlund, Riopel was transferred back to his Junior club The Moncton Wildcats, on December 17th the 17th of December, 2009.

On August 9, 2012, Riopel inked a deal with the Dundee Stars of the EIHL in Scotland. Riopel played two further seasons abroad with Frederikshavn White Hawks in Denmark and in the French Ligue Magnus with the Dragons de Rouen.
