Nicky Piper MBE (born 5 May 1966) is a retired Welsh super middleweight and lightweight boxer who hails from Culverhouse Cross, Cardiff. His career reached its peak in the 90s and he was the Commonwealth Light-heavyweight champion in the year 1995. He was coached with Charlie Pearson and managed by Frank Warren. Since his retirement from boxing, Frank Warren has have become an acclaimed director in British boxing. He currently works with The City Hospice as their Corporate Partnerships Manager.

Piper’s next fight ended with a victory in a tough fight in a tense contest against American Tim Bryan in June 1995. Then he won his win over John Keeton, both fights that were held in Cardiff. On September 30, Piper fought Noel Magee for the Commonwealth Light-Heavyweight title. It was held at Cardiff Arms Park, the fight lasted to the ninth round, when Magee was knocked out, granting Piper the most senior title of the career. In 1996, Piper was in two fights. He won against Danny Juma in Cardiff, and then a successful defense of the Commonwealth belt Bruce Scott at Tylorstown. The next year saw Piper’s two final fights. In June, he beat Stephane Nizard of Norwich prior to his title challenge for WBO Light-heavyweight title against Dariusz Michalczewski at Hanover. Piper was dismissed by his coach following the seventh round and shortly after he retired from boxing.

Despite losing to Benn Piper’s next bout was another title fight. This time, it was to defend an unclaimed WBA Inter-Continental light heavyweight belt. The bout with Argentinean Miguel Angel Maldonando went long enough and ended with Piper receiving the title via a unanimity of points. A month after, on the 10th of April 1993 Piper won his fight with Chris Sande in Swansea. Piper finished the year by winning against Trevor Ambrose and a drawn match against Frank Rhodes. Piper started 1994 by launching an attempt to take his WBO Light-heavyweight title. The title was later taken by Leeonzer Barter. Piper did not win his challenge after being stopped by a technical knockout again, this time in the ninth. Piper took on two more fights in 1994, winning against Charles Oliver and a failed attempt to win an unclaimed Commonwealth Light- heavyweight title. He was defeated in the ninth round by Crawford Ashley.

Piper’s first professional fight was listed as being against the fellow Welshman Kevin Roper. Piper took the fight after the first round by knockout. Piper was then victorious in nine of his subsequent ten fights, each scheduled for between six and eight rounds. Of the ten fights only one, a bout against the future British Heavyweight champion Maurice Core was a full-length fight, resulting in an unbeatable draw. Piper defeated his nine opponents via knockout, retirement or a technical knockout. Piper’s debut professional loss was to the future World Cruiserweight Champion Carl Thompson at York Hall on 4 September 1991, Piper being stopped by technical knockouts in the third round. The following month Piper returned to the ring and defeated Franky Moro to win a bout in the Royal Albert Hall. Piper finished the year 1991 by winning in the sixth round against Carlos Christie.

The first one, a win over Frank Eubank, was an eliminator for the British Super Middleweight title. Another elimination to earn an opportunity to earn the Super Middleweight belt saw Piper defeat Johhny Melfah via technological knockout, in his fifth fight round at the G-Mex center in Manchester. Piper’s next bout was against WBC Super Middleweight champion Nigel Benn who was a contender to win the title. The 12-round contest took place at the Alexandria Pavilion in London on 12 December 1992. Benn ended Piper in the 11th round on technical knockout.

After his retirement from boxing Piper became a sports commentator and in 1997 a member of the British Boxing Board of Control. Piper served as Chairman of the Professional Boxing Association and in 2005 he was awarded the MBE for his services to the sport. Piper is a member of Mensa and currently works for The City Hospice (formerly George Thomas Hospice Care) their Corporate Partnership Manager
