Although it is one of the most iconic images of the 20th century, President Nixon doubted once the authenticity of my photograph after he first saw it in the papers on June 12, 1972. … For me and many others, the picture was more authentic than I could have imagined. The photo was just as real as the Vietnam war. It was not necessary to fix the horror of Vietnam war that I had witnessed. The photo of the terrified little girl who was beaten to death is still a vivid testimony to its authenticity. Kim Phuc will never forget that moment from thirty years ago. It changed our lives.

… An editor at the Associated Press rejected Kim Phuc’s photo of her running down the road in no clothing, as it displayed frontal nudity. Photographs of nudes of any age or sexe, especially those with frontal views, were forbidden by the Associated Press in 1972… Horst argued via telex that an exception should be made with the New York head office, but with the condition that only a close-up of Kim Phuc would be sent. Hal Buell, New York’s photo editor, agreed that the photograph’s news value outweighed any concerns about nudity.
