She is an ex- politician of the English Labour Party. From 2005 to 2010, she was Plymouth Devonport’s Member of Parliament (MP). In 2010, she won the new seat at Plymouth Moor View. She lost the seat to the Conservative Party during the 2015 general elections. She was the shadow Housing and Defence Minister.

The Parliamentary Commissioner for Standards revealed that Seabeck was being investigated by them in December 2010. This was regarding the declaration of member’s interest. Seabeck was then asked to apologize for participating in a debate about fire safety while not declaring that Nick Raynsford, her partner, was a member the Fire Protection Association.

In the 2010 general election Seabeck successfully held her seat in Plymouth Moor View.

In 2014 she tried to introduce an exemption from the so-called ‘bedroom tax’ so that victims of domestic violence with a “panic room” installed were no longer penalised for the additional room.

Seabeck, who was replaced by David Jamieson at the 2005 general elections with a majority 8103, was elected to office. From 2007 to 2008, she was a Government Whip at the Department for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform. Between 2009 and 2010, she chaired the South West Regional Select Committee. She also sat on both the Local Government Select Committee (2005-2007) and the Regulatory Reform Select Committee (2005-2007).

Seabeck attended Harold Hill Grammar School, later Upper Bedfords Park School in 1973. She attended the North East London Polytechnic, now the University of East London in Stratford. Seabeck was an MSF member (now Unite) and, while working in the House of Commons, became the secretary of South Thames Community Branch. She is also a member the feminist Fawcett Society as well as the Labour Women’s Network.

On 11 October 2010, Seabeck was appointed Shadow Housing Minister, working with Caroline Flint, the then shadow secretary for Communities and Local Government. On 7 October 2011, she was appointed Shadow Defence Minister during Ed Miliband’s reshuffle.
