He is a musician, composer, and most well-known as the lead singer and principal songwriter for The Dream Academy. Some of his most popular songs include “Life in a Northern Town”, “The Love Parade”, “The Edge of Forever”, and “This World”. He also wrote “Power to Believe”, “Indian Summer”, and “12/8 Angel”.

He was a friend of David Gilmour and co-produced The Dream Academy, A Different Kind of Weather, and The Act albums. Gilmour’s younger brother Mark Gilmour was guitarist in The Act. He also wrote lyrics for two songs on Pink Floyd’s album The Division Bell. He was also known as Trashmonk and opened for Gilmour’s shows in the 2000s. Gilmour was also a part of The Dream Academy’s “Living in a War”, and “The Chosen Few” performances, which were first published retrospectively in 2014 on The Morning Lasted All Day – A Retrospective.

In May 2007, Laird-Clowes organised, together with Joe Boyd, the Syd Barrett memorial concert “The Madcap’s Last Laugh” at the Barbican Centre in London, in which he also performed (the concert also featured both Pink Floyd and Roger Waters).

In 2013 he worked as both composer and music consultant for the Richard Curtis directed film , About Time.

Mona Lisa Overdrive, his solo album, was originally released in 1999 under the name Trashmonk by Alan McGee’s Creation Records. It was reissued several years later under the new PopTones label, which McGee again created.

Before The Dream Academy, Laird-Clowes was a member both of Alfalpha (one EMI 1977 album) and The Act (one EMI 1982 album “Too Late At 20” produced for Joe Boyd’s Haniball label). He also presented the first series on Channel 4’s music show, The Tube.

He was the musical consultant for Bernardo Bertolucci’s The Dreamers, and was responsible for composing the music for Fierce People, a 2005 film directed by Griffin Dunne, starring Diane Lane and Donald Sutherland and for Wit Licht, directed by Jean van de Velde. Nick Broomfield’s film Battle for Haditha, premiered at the London Film Festival in 2007, also had a Laird-Clowes soundtrack. In June 2009, he scored Broomfield’s agitprop documentary for Greenpeace, A Time Comes, featuring the single “Mayday”.
