He co-authored these books with his brother Desmond Higham. He is the Editor of Princeton Companion to Applied Mathematics as well as a contributor to Penguin Dictionary of Mathematics. His books were translated into Korean, Japanese, and Chinese.

He was the Cornell University, Ithaca, New York, Visiting Assistant Professor in Computer Science from 1988-1989.

Higham attended Eccles Grammar School and Eccles College. He also received his B.Sc. from the University of Manchester. In Mathematics (1982), M.Sc. M.Sc. in Mathematics (1982), M.Sc. in Numerical Analysis and Computing (83), and PhD In Numerical Analysis (1985). George Hall was the supervisor of his PhD thesis. Householder VI, 1987, for the best PhD thesis on numerical algebra 1984-1987, the 1988 Leslie Fox Prize in Numerical Analysis and the 1999 Junior Whitehead Prize of the London Mathematical Society. Higham was awarded the prestigious Royal Society Wolfson Research Merit Award from 2003 to 2008. In 2007, he was elected Fellow of the Royal Society. He was elected Fellow of the Royal Society in 2007. In 2016, he was elected Member of Academia Europea.

Higham served as President of the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM) 2017-2018, as Vice President at Large 2010-2013, and on the SIAM Board of Trustees 2006-2009, and Council 1996-2001. He was a member of the Applied Mathematics sub-panel for the 2008 UK Research Assessment Exercise and the Mathematical Sciences sub-panel of the 2014 UK Research Exercise Excellence Framework.
