His dissertation was on the modern Occult Revival, theosophy, at the end the nineteenth century.

His later works include Paracelsus: Essential Readings (1990), and Black Sun: Aryan Cults and Esoteric Nazism (1996).

Goodrick-Clarke was the Director of the Centre for the Study of Esotericism (EXESESO) within the College of Humanities at Exeter until his death on 29 August 2012. Goodrick-Clarke was survived by his wife Clare, whom he married in 1985.

The basis of his most famous work, The Occult Roots of Nazism, was Goodrick- Clarke’s Oxford DPhil dissertation. Since its 1985 publication, this book has been in continuous print and has been translated into 12 languages.

Nicholas Goodrick-Clarke (15 February 1953 – 29 Aug 2012) was an English historian and professor of Western Esotericism, University of Exeter. He is best known for writing several books on interwar German history and esoteric traditions.

Goodrick-Clarke founded “The Society” in 1983. This informal London-based organization of amateur and professional scholars of esotericism included Ellic Howe and John Hamill. It also included Ellic Cox, John Hamill, Christopher McIntosh, a scholar of Rosicrucianism. Goodrick-Clarke was a founding Member of the European Society for the Study of Western Esotericism (ASE) in America. From 1995 to 1995, he was a faculty member at the New York Open Center.

In his varied career, Goodrick-Clarke worked as a schoolmaster, banker, and a successful fundraiser for The Campaign for Oxford. In 2002, Goodrick-Clarke was appointed a Research Fellow in Western Esotericism at the University of Lampeter, and then in 2005 he was appointed to a personal chair in the department of History at Exeter University. As Professor of Western Esotericism and Director of the Exeter Centre for the Study of Esotericism (EXESESO), Goodrick-Clarke developed a successful distance-learning MA in Western Esotericism and successfully supervised a number of doctoral students. While at Exeter he wrote The Western Esoteric Traditions: A Historical Introduction, published in 2008.
