Nicholas Alan “Nick” Chamberlain, a British Anglican Bishop was born 25 November 1963. He was elected the suffragan bishop of Grantham in Lincoln’s Diocese on 19 November 2015. Since 2006, he had been vicar of St George, Jesmond’s parish, and St Hilda in Jesmond’s Diocese of Newcastle. Chamberlain was the first bishop of the Church of England to openly identify as gay on September 2, 2016.

He was made a priest at St Barnabas’ Burnmoor in 1998. In addition, he was appointed officer for Continuing Ministry Education and Post Ordination Training within the Diocese.

Chamberlain was the first bishop in the Church of England to come out as gay on 2 September 2016, following threats of an outing from an unnamed Sunday newspaper. He said he was in a celibate same-sex relationship, as required by the bishops’ guidelines, under which gay clergy must assure bishops that they are celibate and may not marry. Gay bishops are, however, permitted to enter into civil partnerships. Chamberlain also described his relationship with his partner and their commitment. “Chamberlain said he had been with his partner for many years. ‘It is faithful, loving, we are like-minded, we enjoy each other’s company and we share each other’s life,’ he said.” Church of England Newspaper reported that he and his partner have been together for over 30 years. An overwhelming proportion of approximately 500 letters and emails prompted by his coming out were supportive.

In April 2019, he wrote an Easter devotional expressing thanks “that the silence over LGBT+ people has been broken.”

In 1991, he was ordained deacon at Durham Cathedral. After that, he served as a priest in the Diocese Durham parish of St Mary Cockerton. In 1994, he was appointed curate at St Francis’ Church in Newton Aycliffe. He then became the team vicar in 1995. When the parish of St Andrew Great Aycliffe was established, the Great Aycliffe Team Ministry was formed.

Chamberlain was raised in Staines, and attended Christleton High School. Chamberlain then went on to study English and American Literature at St Chad’s College in Durham and received a Bachelor’s of Arts (BA), degree in 1985.
