Niall Blaney, a politician from Ireland, was born 29 January 1974 and has been a senator for the Agricultural Panel ever since April 2020. From 2002 to 2011, he was a member and Teachta Dala (TD), for Donegal North-East. He decided to not contest the 2011 general elections for personal reasons. Since then, he had contested several Seanad elections, and tried, but failed to, win a Fianna Fail nomination for the Midlands-North-West constituency in the 2019 European Parliament election.

Blaney made a surprise announcement on 30 January 2011 just hours before the Fianna Fail selection convention in his constituency. He said that he will not be contesting general election 2011. Blaney stated that he had “personal reasons” to his decision. His retirement brought an end to one of the longest political families in Ireland. Blaney was a member of the Oireachtas for only a few brief periods between 1927 and 2011.

Blaney tried, but failed, to win a Fianna Fáil nomination in the Midlands –North-West constituency for the 2019 European Parliament election.

Blaney was an unsuccessful candidate for the Industrial and Commercial Panel of Seanad Éireann in the April 2016 election.

Blaney won the third constituency seat at the 2007 general elections, beating Joe McHugh from Fine Gael and Jim McDaid from Fianna Fail. After a hard-fought battle with Sinn Fein councillor Padraig Mac Lochlainn, Blaney was elected to the eighth count.

Blaney was first involved in politics in 1999 when he was elected to Donegal County Council. In 2002, Blaney was elected to Dail Eireann. He won the third seat in Donegal North-East after Cecilia Keaveney and Jim McDaid.

Niall Blaney was born in Letterkenny, County Donegal in 1974. He graduated from Letterkenny Institute of Technology with a diploma in civil engineering. He married Rosaleen in August 2002 and the couple had three children together. On 9 January 2011, at a political meeting at the Silver Tassie Hotel, Letterkenny, Blaney disclosed that he and his wife had agreed to an amicable separation and that he had moved out of the family home in Rosnakill, Fanad.
