After losing an appeal, he began serving his suspension on June 18. Overall, for the 2014 Red Sox, Workman appeared in 19 games (15 starts) and had a 1–10 record with 5.17 ERA. He also appeared in 11 games (all starts) with Triple-A Pawtucket, compiling a 7–1 record with 4.11 ERA.

Workman got promoted into Boston in July 2013 after suffering a season-ending foot injury that afflicted Andrew Miller. His major league debut was with Seattle’s Seattle Mariners on July 10, Workman pitched two innings in relief, allowing three runs while striking out four. Through the rest of 2013’s Red Sox season, Workman recorded a 6-3 mark with a 4.97 ERA over 20 regular seasons games (3 starts) and didn’t let an earned run through the seven appearances in postseason. He pitched a flawless eighth inning in Game six of 2013’s World Series, setting up Boston closer Koji Uehara. Workman also had his first professional appearance during Game 3 of the World Series, striking out on three pitches in succession.
