Spruce was with the Rams throughout the offseason program. He caught six passes against Dallas in that preseason opener. However, he did not see much action during the next weeks because he had to compete with new-arrived receivers Sammy Watkins and Cooper Kupp for a roster spot. Spruce was injured/waived by the Rams on September 2, 2017. Two days later, he was released by the team after a settlement for injuries.

On May 14, 2018, Spruce signed with the Los Angeles Chargers. He was waived on September 1, 2018.

On March 30, 2018, Nelson was signed by the Kansas City Chiefs. He was waived on May 8, 2018.

Spruce redshirted his freshman year and led the Colorado Buffaloes’ receiving yards (44) and receptions (446) in his first season. He then racked up 55 catches and 650 receiving yards in his sophomore season. His junior season of 2014 was his breakthrough year. He set 31 school records and a Pac-12 record for receiving 19 passes against California. Spruce, a senior in 2015 broke the Pac-12 record for receptions in a match against UCLA.

Spruce was undrafted in 2016 NFL Draft. He signed as an undrafted-free agent with the Los Angeles Rams. Spruce made a huge impression in his debut preseason game. He caught six passes for 51 yards and scored a touchdown to help Los Angeles defeat Dallas Cowboys 28-24. This was the Rams’ first game back in Los Angeles since moving from St. Louis. Spruce sustained a knee injury during the game-winning play, and was out the rest of the preseason. Spruce was placed on the Rams’ regular-season roster but remained on their inactive list. Spruce sustained a second calf injury and was placed on injured reserve November 18, 2016. This ended his rookie season, but he did not make his regular-season NFL debut.

On September 28, 2018, Spruce signed with the San Diego Fleet of the new Alliance of American Football. During the third week of the AAF season against the San Antonio Commanders, Spruce caught four passes for 50 yards and two touchdowns in a 31-11 victory. Spruce had a season high 12 catches for 146 yards in week seven against the Arizona Hotshots. The league ceased operations in April 2019. Spruce would finish fifth in the Alliance of American Football in receiving yards with 426 and second in receptions with 38.
