Nelson Asaytono is one of the most popular and richest Filipino- Basketball Player who was born on January 25, 1967 in San Teodoro, Oriental Mindoro, Oriental Mindoro, Philippines. Nelson Asaytono, born January 25, 1967, is a retired professional Filipino basketball player. He played for Purefoods and Swift/Sunkist/Pop Cola during his 17-year career.

After four victories with Swift/Sunkist Asaytono was traded in April 1996 to San Miguel Beermen for Renato Agustin, one-time MVP.

When the team drafted future MVP Danny Ildefonso in the 1998 season, his minutes was again reduced but still he led the team in scoring. He led Beermen to the finals twice in All Filipino and Commissioner’s Cup in that season, but came up short in both occasions to the Alaska Milkmen. A year later, when Jong Uichico took over the coaching reins from Jacobs, he was relegated to the bench and was eventually traded to his former team, the Pop Cola 800s (together with hotshot William Antonio) for Dwight Lago, Boybits Victoria, and Nic Belasco.

On April 7, 2005, he passed Crispa great Philip Cezar for the fifth spot all- time scoring list after tallying with 17 points on 6-of-9 shooting. Currently, he is fifth in the PBA all-time scoring list with 12,268 total points in 796 career games, behind only Ramon Fernandez, Abet Guidaben, Alvin Patrimonio and Atoy Co.

Purefoods traded Asaytono to Swift in late 1991 for first round picks 1994 and 1995. Asaytono was made a millionaire by the PBA franchise when he signed a lucrative pact with RFM. Asaytono was a Swift player for two seasons and made the mythical five selection. He also had a good run at the Most Valuable Player(MVP) title. He finished second in the statistical race in 1993 but was third in the polls, in a disappointing bid for the most coveted award. Asaytono was only able to make the mythical second team selection in 1994 after his first full season playing Swift. However, he still did well with an average 18.6 points per game and 7.2 rebounds over 65 games.

Asaytono, a former pro Loreto Torrentino, is one of the most talented players to ever step up at a lesser-known university in University of Manila. He was his coach at UM Hawks. Asaytono’s first national experience was as a member of the RP Youth Team that participated in the 9th ABC Youth Championships in Manila. In 1987, he would be a part of the national team under Joe Lipa. Asaytono was also a player for coach Derrick Pumaren at Magnolia Ice Cream, the PABL. He won three championships.

Asaytono was selected by the Purefoods Hotdogs as the 2nd overall pick in 1989. Asaytono played three seasons with the club that had most of his former national teammates, Jojo Lastimosa and Alvin Patrimonio. Nelson would mainly play on the bench with Patrimonio as the starting forward. Purefoods awarded him two championships. He was a Tender Juicy Hotdog’s final season in 1991. His notable performances at the All-Filipino finals against Diet Sarsi were noteworthy.

Asaytono’s trade to San Miguel proved to be the turning point of his career. He became go-to-guy in Coach Ron Jacobs’s rotation as well as its franchise player. In 1997, he became one of the forerunners for the MVP award but he again came short to former teammate Alvin Patrimonio. Although he lost the MVP race, he led the league in scoring.
