He was a representative player for England (Under-21s), Lancashire (under-21s), as well as Wigan Warriors (academy), where he played as a goal- kicking fullback or stand-off.
Turley set many club records including goals and points per season. Leigh was unable to win the Grand Final. The relegated Super League teams, Huddersfield Giants, and Salford City Reds, remained fully professional in 2002 and 2003. Leigh lost successive Grand Finals due to their full-time coaching and fitness. Halifax was relegated to the 2004 National League competition because of financial difficulties. Leigh was able to achieve their dream by overcoming these obstacles. After much overtime, Leigh beat Whitehaven 32-16 to achieve Super League status for 2005’s Super League X.
Turley’s 2001 debut season as a senior team player saw him break the world record for full back tries. He ended the season with 55. Turley was also awarded representative honours by playing in both the England under-21 Tests against South Africa and for Lancashire in the Origin series against Yorkshire. Leigh won the Challenge Cup against Super League neighbors Salford City Reds in his debut season. This resulted in Leigh finishing nine points clear at top of the Northern Ford Premiership. Leigh also claimed the Trans- Pennine Cup. Warrington Wolves made Turley their target and offered to purchase the Leigh club, but Turley declined. The fantastic year was marred by Oldham’s defeat in the semi-final of the play-off. However, the Widnes Vikings won the Grand Final and were awarded a spot in the Super League.

Neil began his career with Wigan Warriors as a junior, and then moved up to the Academy. He was an Academy player and he played in the 1998 Academy Grand Final against Wigan Rhinos. They lost to Leeds Rhinos who had such international stars like Rob Burrow and Kevin Sinfield.
Turley was an understudy to Kris Radlinski, Great Britain fullback. His senior career at Wigan did not go as planned. Turley accepted the Leigh Centurions’ Second Division offer in 2000. Norman Turley was Neil’s dad and Leigh’s assistant coach. Turley was chosen to be Leigh’s starting fullback after a successful debut against the South Sydney Rabbitohs of Australia in late 2000.
Turley announced his retirement in April 2006, due to a serious recurring back injury. He made 122 appearances for Leigh, scoring 1,501 points, including 132 tries.
