He was previously the offensive coordinator for the Jacksonville Jaguars (2016-2018), the Buffalo Bills (2013-2014) and the Syracuse Orange in college soccer.
Hackett worked with Blake Bortles, running back Leonard Fournette and quarterback Blake Bortles to coordinate the league’s top rushing attack. This resulted in Jacksonville winning the AFC South in 2017 and the AFC Championship. Marrone fired Hackett on November 26, 2018, after the Jaguars fell to 3-8 the following season. This surprise move surprised him.
Marrone decided to leave his contract with Bills after the 2014 season. Hackett was hired by Jacksonville Jaguars as an assistant head coach and offensive line coach. After Marrone’s firing, Hackett was promoted to interim head coaching. Hackett was also promoted from quarterbacks coach and made interim offensive coordinator. In January 2017, he was confirmed in that role.

Hackett started his NFL career in 2006 as a quality coach with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He had previously worked as an assistant coach at UC Davis and Stanford. After two years, Hackett moved to Buffalo Bills where he was in the same position for the 2008-2009 seasons. During those years, he worked alongside quarterbacks like Bruce Gradkowski and Chris Simms, Trent Edwards and Ryan Fitzpatrick. Syracuse hired Hackett in 2010 as tight ends coach and quarterbacks coach under Doug Marrone. He would later move to Buffalo and Jacksonville. Hackett was promoted as offensive coordinator the next year.
Marrone was hired by the Bills as their head coach in 2013. Hackett returned to Buffalo as the offensive coordination. The Bills were 29th in passing offense with quarterbacks EJ Manuel and Thad Lewis and a strong running game with halfbacks C. J. Spiller, Fred Jackson. The Bills finished the year with a respectable passing offense but a poor running game when Kyle Orton replaced Manuel.
Hackett was hired by the Green Bay Packers as their offensive coordinator on January 14, 2019.
