After serving as injury cover for Super Rugby’s Crusaders in the beginning of 2016, he was selected in Canterbury’s main feeder union’s squad for 2016 Mitre 10 Cup. He played 9 games, 7 as a substitute for Ben Funnell, and scored 4 tries that helped Canterbury win the Mitre 10 Cup Premiership in 2016. This was their 8th consecutive success in nine seasons.

Vella played super rugby for the Crusaders in 2016, and again in 2018, for the Hurricanes against Crusaders. Vella then played in the 2019 Japanese Super Side, the Sunwolves. Vella was purchased into the team after Ricky Jackson, third choice Highlanders hooker, suffered an ankle injury prior to the 2020 season.
