He is an Australian professional rugby league footballer. He played as both a fullback and a wing for the Cronulla Sharks. He has previously played for the Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks and Parramatta Eels Toyota Cup (Under-20s). In the 2010 season, he made his debut for the National Rugby League (NRL), premiership against the Penrith Panthers.

Nathan was just as good as his first season, scoring 4 tries in 7 matches. In Round 7, Gardner was injured when he made his well-known kick returns. He also fell awkwardly. He was supposed to be out for two weeks, but he returned against the Rabbitohs the following game. He was injured again and missed 5 weeks. Round 13 was against the Broncos when he returned. They lost 36-16. He scored a try as well as a try assist in Round 15. They won the game 26-10. He scored two tries against Titans in Round 16. They won the game 36 to 12. He almost attempted another kick return in Round 17. But he couldn’t make it all the way. The Sharks won the game 26 to 4. He has been playing well ever since. Gardner required surgery to repair the injury to his ankle sustained in round 7 of the NRL finals series 2011.

On November 19, 2015 it was announced that Gardner had signed with NSW Cup team Wentworthville Magpies for the 2016 season.

In 2015, Gardner spent the season playing for Newtown in the Intrust Super Premiership NSW.

Parramatta Eels signed Gardner for the 2008 season. He began playing in the Toyota Cup (Under-20s). He played 16 games in his first season and scored 136 points. He also kicked 32 goals from 44 attempts, as well as scoring 18 tries. He then followed that with four more tries to assist the Toyota Cup (Under-20s), to their first season victory with a 22 to 16 win over South Sydney. He participated in five more matches, scoring one more try and scoring two goals on four attempts.

In August 2014, Gardner was one of the Sharks players who accepted reduced bans from ASADA under the Sport Minister Peter Dutton for his part in the club’s 2011 supplements scandal.
