Appanah was born on 24 May 1973 in Mauritius. Appanah is from the traditional Indian family of Pathareddy Appanah. Like most Mauritiusans, her first language was Mauritian creole. Her early education was in Mauritius. She was a journalist in Le Mauricien, Weekend Scope and Weekend Scope magazines in Mauritius. In 1998, she moved to France and began her writing career. She published poetry and news about Mauritius during her time at the magazines.

The Last Brother, her novel about an orphaned Jew that escaped the Nazi invasion of Czhechoslovkia is based on this story. He was refused entry to British-run Palestine. The Guardian published a review about the novel and described it as “a brilliant, believable account, a compelling image of a child’s loneliness, and the short, feverish excitement that it ends.” New York Times rated her fourth novel The Last Brother second only to J. M. G. Le Clezio, 2008 Nobel Prize winner. Geoffrey Strachan translated the book in English and it was her second translation.

In 2018 Graywolf Press published Waiting for Tomorrow, also translated into English by Geoffrey Strachan. It was shortlisted for the 2019 Albertine Prize.

Her first novel, The Rocks of Gold Dust was published in the Dark Continents collection by Gallimard. Blue Bay Palace is her second novel. It focuses on the love of a young Indian for someone from another caste. La Noce d’Anna, 2005 Editions Gallimard), was also a novel she wrote. It won prizes at various regional festivals in France. The entire book is set in France. She published her fourth book, Le Dernier Frere Ed de L’Olivier in 2007. It won the Prix FNAC.

In her own words, Appanah narrates that “I lived in Mayotte from 2008 to 2010 and had been struck by the number of children in the streets. They were not abandoned, they were not the round they were playing happily on every street corner , some were even occasionally at school and in the evening, they found a roof.”
