He played college football at Texas as a walkon despite not having ever played any organized football. In 2015, the Seattle Seahawks signed Boyer as an undrafted agent.

Boyer was undrafted in 2015’s NFL Draft. He signed a free-agent contract with the Seattle Seahawks, May 2, 2015. Boyer was part of three plays during the Seahawks’ preseason match against the Denver Broncos. He also recorded a tackle. To make way for Jake Waters, he was released by Seahawks on August 18, 2015.

In 2017, Boyer appeared in the Madden NFL 18 video game’s story mode Longshot, in which he portrayed Captain McCarthy, a soldier who assisted protagonist Devin Wade in rediscovering a love for football. Like Boyer, Devin was both a Texas Longhorn and member of the Army, though Boyer stated the connection was coincidental; an ESPN documentary about Boyer was also titled The Long Shot.

Boyer was born in El Cerrito and attended Amador Valley High School. He then transferred to Valley Christian School. His father is a veterinarian, and his mother an environmental engineer. Boyer worked briefly as a deckhand on a San Diego sport fishing boat after graduating from high school. Before he quit, he also studied to be a firefighter. Boyer, who graduated high school in 1999, moved to Hollywood to pursue a career as an actor. He became a humanitarian worker in Sudan in 2004, building camps for the refugees of the War In Darfur. Boyer was a walk-on for the University of Texas, despite not having played in any downs of organized football. In his freshman year, Boyer was a redshirt and played once against Texas Tech on the kickoff team. He was named the Longhorns’ starting long snapper the following year and played 38 games consecutively. He was the first-team Academic All-Big 12 Conference Member from 2012 to 2014, and was also named an Academic All-American in 2012. He was the first recipient of the Armed Forces Merit Award and was named the 2012-13 Big 12 Sportsperson of the year. He was a semifinalist in the William V. Campbell Trophy from 2013-14. He was inducted into the NFF Hampshire Honor Society in 2015. This honor society recognizes college athletes who have a minimum cumulative grade point average (3.2) during their college careers.

Boyer was not invited to the NFL Scouting Combine, although he attended Texas’ Pro Day on March 24, 2015. Boyer later attended the San Francisco 49ers’ Pro Day on April 17, 2015.
