Natalia Polosmak is one of the most popular and richest Anthropologist who was born on September 12, 1956 in Khabarovsk, Khabarovsk Krai, Russia. Natalia Polosmak’s famous Ice Maiden find is well-known. The mummy was found in an old, undisturbed burial mound. It was unique in that the mummy was interred by a woman with full ceremonial honors, a rare distinction at that time for a woman. The intricate tattoos on the mummy date back to the 5th Century BCE. The black felt headdress she wore was elegant and was decorated with figures. A necklace made of wood camels was worn by her, as well as high- heeled leather boots. Her dress was made of woven camel hair, sheep’s wool and braided tassels. It was also colored with insect dye. Another 300 BC-era tattooed mummy was also found at the site.

Russian archaeologists working in the Altai were banned, and Polosmak was also barred from excavating grave-sites on Ukok Plateau. Polosmak was upset about the ban because, since the discovery of “Ice Maiden”, she had made the area her entire life’s work and conducted archaeological studies there. After two decades of being considered a Russian corps, the “Ice Maiden”, was finally repatriated to the Altai’s Anokhin Museum on 20 September 2012.

Polosmak and her crew were digging the site and freezing the artifacts using water from a nearby lake that had been heated with blow torch flames. Rumours circulated among Ukoks that disturbing the dead could have serious consequences. Polosmak lost control of the helicopter used to transport the remains of the maiden from Russia. This caused an emergency landing, and the Ice Maiden suffered some damage due to lack of refrigeration. This was considered a sign that the maiden didn’t like being disturbed. A September 2003 earthquake in Altay was linked to bad luck and disturbing the dead.

Natalia Viktorovna Polosmak, Russian: Natal’ia Viktorovna Polos’mak – born 12 September 1956, is a Russian archaeologist who specialises in the study and analysis of early Metal Age Eurasian nomads. She was born in Russia. Her most notable accomplishment is her analysis and discovery of the Ice Maiden Mug, which is the subject of an ethnic political debate between Russian scientists as well as the Altay people.

Polosmak was carrying out archaeological reconnaissance on the barren Ukok Plateau in 1993 when she came across a remarkable archaeological find: a female mummy, frozen in permafrost. She associated it with the Pazyryk based on intact clothing that was still on the well-preserved body. The Iron Age people of the Altay Mountains, and the Ukok Plateau were the Pazyryk. Numerous tomb mounds (kurgans), have been discovered in the region and have been linked to the Pazyryk Culture. This group closely resembles the famous Scythian people of the west. In general, the term Kurgan is used to refer to the barrow burials that were found in the region. Amazing archaeological artifacts were discovered during excavations at this site.
