The Miami Dolphins selected Moore in the third round of 1974 NFL Draft (78th overall). He played for the Dolphins 13 seasons, 1974 through 1986. After a record 52 receptions, Moore was elected to the Pro Bowl in 1977. He also led the league in receiving touchdowns with 12, and also had a rushing touchdown in that season. Moore’s story is captured in the “Helicopter Catch” video clip. Moore was receiving a reception in New York against the Jets in Giants Stadium, 1984 when he was struck simultaneously by two Jets tacklers. His body spun into the air. This crucial third-down conversion was key to Moore’s win.

Nathaniel Moore, born September 19, 1951, is an American former professional footballer who was a wide receiver for the National Football League (NFL), for 13 seasons between the 1970s and the 1980s. Moore was a Florida Gator college football player. He then played professional football for the Miami Dolphins. Moore is most well-known as the favorite passing target for Dolphins quarterbacks Dan Marino and Bob Griese.

Moore was recommended by his junior college football coach to receive an athletic scholarship to transfer from University of Tennessee at Martin, Tennessee, to University of Florida in Gainesville. He was a star running back on Doug Dickey’s Gators teams of 1972 and 1973. Moore was a junior in 1972 and led the Gators with 145 rushing yards for 845 yards and nine touchdown rushing touchdowns. He also had 25 receptions for 351 receiving yard and four touchdown catch touchdowns. He was first-team All-Southeastern Conference and honorable mention All-American.

Moore is also known for his humanitarian work and philanthropy. In 1984, the NFL voted Moore as “Man of the Year,” an honor given to a player who gives outstanding service to his community. Moore also received the Byron White Humanitarian Award in 1986. He created The Nat Moore Foundation, an organization through which he continues to work with disadvantaged youths in the Miami-Dade County area, in 1998.
