Stokey has published important research in the areas economic growth and development as well as papers about economic history (“A Quantitative model of the British Industrial Revolution: 1780-1850,” 2001), and optimal control (“Dynamic programming with homogeneous functions,” 1998, co-authored by Fernando Alvarez). Paul Milgrom and she are the co-authors of the no trade theorem. This is a counterintuitive theory that challenges the assumptions of financial economics. Robert Lucas, Jr., and Edward Prescott co-authored a book about recursive methods in economic dynamics that is widely used by graduate students and research economists. Stokey collaborated with Paul Milgrom on “Information, Trade and Common Knowledge” (1982), which proved that information-based trading is impossible for rational agents with shared knowledge. This work was a pillar of modern finance.

She is also the author of The Economics of Inaction (2009), which examines models that have fixed costs of adjustment.

Stokey is a member of The National Academy of Sciences. She was vice-president of American Economic Association from 1996-1997. Since 1993, she has been a member of American academy of Arts and Sciences and since 2004, a member of National Academy of Sciences. She was also a member of the expert panel convened to produce a Copenhagen Consensus on some of the leading scientific/developmental problems of the 21st century. Editorial positions have been held with leading journals such as Econometrica and The Journal of Economic Growth. She has made important contributions to microeconomics and macroeconomics. Nancy Laura Stokey, born May 8, 1950, is the Frederick Henry Prince distinguished service professor of Economics at the University of Chicago. She started her career in 1990 and focuses primarily on mathematical economics. Under the guidance of Kenneth Arrow, she earned her BA and PhD in economics at the University of Pennsylvania in 1972. She also received her PhD at Harvard University in 1978. She is a Fellow of Econometric Society and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. She was previously a co-editor of Econometrica, and a member on the Expert Panel for the Copenhagen Consensus. In 2012, she was awarded an Honorary Doctor of Laws (L.L.D.) from the University of Western Ontario. Her work has largely been about economic dynamics. This is where she most often acts as an expositor. She has spent much of her time researching economic dynamics, growth theory, and fiscal and monetary policies.

Stokey has worked and taught at various institutions. Since 1978 she was an economics professor at Northwestern University, where she rose from assistant professor to department chair in 1987. In the fall of 1982 she was a visiting lecturer at Harvard University, University of Minnesota, and University of Chicago. From 1990 to present, she has taught economics at University of Chicago. She was also a visiting scholar at the Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis’ Research Department for eight falls during the 2000s.

She is currently working on “Technology, Skill, and Long-Run Growth” (June 2017), “Technology, Skill, and the Wage Structure” (June 2017), “The Race Between Technology and The Human Capital” (2014), and “Liquidity Crises: Understanding Sources and Limiting Consequences” with Robert E. Lucas Jr.
