Najib Tarif is one of the most popular and richest Bruneian footballer who was born on February 5, 1988 in Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei. Najib, who has been playing for Brunei Under-21s since 2005, is the only player to have participated in four Hassanal Bolkiah Tournaments. He also won the trophy in 2012. Najib considers his injury-time goal against Cambodia in the opening match of 2012 to be his best ever.
Steve Kean, the club’s head coach, advised him to move to left-back after he had only played seven times in 2015 (as he did to Helmi Zakwan Tahir and Aminuddin Zakwan Tahir). He would be more dependent on him in 2016 after suffering a season-ending injury to Sairol Sahari, first-choice.
Najib became the starting left-back for DPMM’s 2017 campaign which ended in a disappointing 8th place, leading to the dismissal of coach Steve Kean. He was back on the sidelines with the arrival of Suhaimi Anak Sulau in the following season.
Najib linked up with the Brunei national team for the two-legged 2018 AFF Suzuki Cup qualifying matches against Timor-Leste in early September 2018. He started the first leg at left-back in a 3–1 loss on 1 September in Kuala Lumpur. He kept his place in a more advanced role on the return leg at Hassanal Bolkiah National Stadium a week later and scored the only goal of the game. His winning goal gave Brunei their first ever home win for an international game, but the scoreline was not enough to qualify for the Suzuki Cup competition proper.
Najib started his career with NBT FC and AM Gunners in the Brunei Premier League. His performances at the 2012 Hassanalbolkiah Trophy as team Captain prompted a transfer from MS PDB into Brunei’s only professional football club, DPMM.
