Nadiya Savchenko is one of the most popular and richest Military Personnel who was born on May 11, 1981 in Kyiv, Ukraine. Nadiya Victorivna Svchenko (Ukrainian, Nadiia Vicktorivna Sapchenko; born 11 May 1981), is a former Ukrainian Army aviation pilot and politician.

Savchenko was the focus of a passionate social media campaign in Ukraine portraying her as a national hero after her arrest was announced on 19 June. This campaign used #SaveOurGirl as the hashtag (that generated over 15,000 tweets in mid-July 2014); it was apparently inspired by #BringBackOurGirls, which was used in the Chibok schoolgirl kidnapping social network campaign.

On 25 December 2014, Savchenko was included in Ukraine’s quota for representatives in the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE); as noted above, legally this granted her parliamentary immunity in all PACE signatory nations, including Russia.

In late November 2014, Savchenko signed her parliamentary oath and passed it to Ukraine through her lawyer and was thus sworn in as People’s Deputy of Ukraine (MP) on 27 November 2014.

President Viktor Yanukovych ordered Savchenko’s 3rd Army Aviation Regiment to Kiev in December 2013. Savchenko joined the Euromaidan protests, despite not being authorized by her commanding officer. Savchenko kept a low profile throughout the protests. There is video of her trying to persuade protestors not to throw petrol bombs at police officers. Savchenko and her team returned to Brody after the president fled Ukraine in February 2014.

Savchenko, who was 16 years old, had already set her sights on becoming a pilot. After joining the Ukrainian Army, she worked as a radio operator for the country’s railway forces and then trained as a parachutist. In the 2004-2008 Ukrainian peacekeeping forces in Iraq, she was the only female soldier from Ukraine. After her return, she petitioned the Defence Ministry to be allowed to attend the prestigious Air Force University, Kharkiv. She was twice expelled from the university as she was not a suitable candidate to become a pilot. However, both times she was re-instated. She continued to study as a flight navigator, first as a SU-24 Navigator, then later as a Mi-24 Attack helicopter. In 2009, she graduated and served in the 3rd Regiment of the Army Aviation of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, in the city of Brody. She flew 170 hours on Mi-24s as a navigator.

The Ukraine Defence Forces published a 20 minute documentary in 2011 about Savchenko’s military career. In an effort to promote equality within the Ukrainian military, she was also included in a United Nations Development Program. Savchenko found Brody boring, and she often got drunk. Instead of the fast SU-24 bomber, she was unhappy flying on the Mi-24 attack helicopter. Edward Zahurskiy her former commander at Brody described her as an unstable, insubordinate and lack of discipline officer.

Savchenko believes that Ukraine should become “more or less a dictatorship” with a strong leader to stand up to Russia and win, with Augusto Pinochet, Margaret Thatcher, Angela Merkel, Ronald Reagan, and Nelson Mandela as examples. Savchenko has suggested Ukraine should accept the 2014 Russian annexation of Crimea as an attempt to end the War in Donbass.

During the War in Donbass, Savchenko fought as a volunteer in the east of Ukraine in the Aidar Battalion. On 17 June 2014, at 10:46 am she was captured near the village of Metalist, Slovianoserbsk Raion, by members of the Zarya Battalion, an armed pro-Russian militant group that declared allegiance to the self-declared People’s Republic of Luhansk. On 19 June, a video of her interrogation at an undisclosed location appeared on the internet; she was shown handcuffed to a metal pipe. On 20 June, the chief of counter- intelligence Vladimir Gromov said that Savchenko was being well treated. On 22 June, there were media reports that Savchenko had been transferred to Donetsk.
