Nadia Hilou Biography

Nadia Hilou is one of the most popular and richest Politician who was born on July 5, 1953 in Jaffa, Tel Aviv District, Israel. Nadia Hilou (Arabic ndy Hlw ; Hebrew nAdyh Lyv ) was an Arab-Israeli politician and social worker who served as a member in the Knesset for Labor Party from 2006 to 2009. After Hussniya jabara, she was the second Arab female MK in Israel and the first Christian MK.

HaKibbutz HaMeuhad Press published her autobiography in Hebrew in 2013.

She voiced her dissatisfaction with the treatment she received at Ben-Gurion Airport for her children in 2007. In 2009, she lost her seat.

Hilou was the daughter of Christian-Arab parents and was born in Jaffa (Israel). In 1976, she received a BA degree in social work from Tel Aviv University. Later, she returned to earn an MA in the subject. She was appointed director of the Division for the Status of Women in the Union of local authorities in 1997. In 2002, she was elected deputy chairwoman of the Na’amat Women’s Organisation.

Hilou became a politician after the assassination in 1995 of Yitzhak Rabin. Hilou joined the Labour Party and ran in the party primaries before the Knesset elections of 1996 and 1999. However, she did not finish high enough on the list to win a seat and was criticised for choosing to join one of the Arab parties. In the lead-up to 2006 elections, Hilou was ranked 15th (a reserved slot for women) on Labour’s list. Hilou was elected to the Knesset and won 19 seats for the party. She also relinquished her positions. She was the Chair of the Committee on the Rights of the Child. She was the first to sponsor a bill that strengthened laws against cyber sex among minors. She also introduced legislation to compensate the families of victims of murder.

Hilou lived in Jaffa, and died in February 2015. She was survived by a husband and four daughters, Natali, Cristina, Rola and Rena.
