2015 to 2018 Annadurai was heading ISRO Satellite Centre, Bangalore as director. The centre is responsible for building state of the art satellites for communication, remote sensing, navigation, space science and interplanetary missions.

In 2019 Annadurai has been appointed as vice president for Tamil Nadu State Council for Science and Technology.

Chandrayaan-1 was India’s first lunar mission launched by the Indian Space Research Organisation. The unmanned lunar exploration mission featured a lunar orbiter as well as an impactor. India launched the spacecraft using a modified version the PSLV C11 from Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota (Nellore District), Andhra Pradesh, at 06:22 IST (00.52 UTC) on 22 October 2008. This mission was a significant boost for India’s space program and India joined an international group of Asian countries (China and Japan), in exploring the Moon. On 8 November 2008, the vehicle was successfully placed into lunar orbit.

Annadurai was educated in his village Kodhawady. In 1980, he received a bachelor’s in engineering (electronics & communication) from Government College of Technology in Coimbatore Tamil Nadu, India. He then completed his master’s in engineering at PSG College of Technology in Coimbatore in 1982 and his Ph.D. at Anna University of Technology in Coimbatore Tamil Nadu. In 1982, he joined ISRO. He was the mission director for INSAT missions and made some of the first contributions to maintaining the INSAT systems.

As Chandrayaan I’s project director, he managed a team consisting of engineers and scientists. The project required instrumentation from ISRO, NASA, ESA and Bulgaria. This was to enable simultaneous chemical, mineral, resource, and topographic mappings of the entire lunar surface at high spatial resolutions and spectral resolutions. The project was completed within the given timeframe and budget. He has helped to create the foundation for future Indian planetary missions. He also set the standard for international cooperation by bringing renowned international organizations like NASA, ESA and JAXA under the guidance of ISRO. Chandrayaan I was awarded many national and international awards, including the coveted Space Pioneers award in science and engineering at the 28th International Conference on Space development in Florida USA in 2009.

India’s first mission to Mars, the Mars Orbiter Mission, or Mangalyaan, reached the planet on 24 September 2014 completing its 300-day journey. While ISRO has been researching for a Mars mission for many years, the project was only approved by the government in August 2012. ISRO took over a year to work on the spacecraft and bring the project to implementation stage. The Mars Orbiter Mission was launched on 5 November 2013 from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota, Andhra Pradesh, on the country’s east coast. After travelling 670 million kilometres, Mangalyaan is now set to study the surface features, morphology, mineralogy and Martian atmosphere to better understand the climate, geology, origin, evolution and sustainability of life on the planet. It is the most cost effective of all the missions sent to the planet by any other country costing India about $74 million.
