Poulsen was raised in the Herning Blue Fox family before moving to Nordsjaelland Cobras in 2008-09. He returned to Herning after two seasons with the North Zealand club. He enjoyed great success back with his hometown team playing with North American imports Bryan Marshall, Kevin Gardner. Poulsen was runner-up with 35 assists and 25 goals in the regular season points race, totaling 60 points over 39 games. He was the Danish champion with Herning in 2007 and 2008.
Poulsen was a member of the Danish national team that competed at the World Championships in 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2015 respectively.
