Klimchuk was traded from the Pats and the Brandon Wheat Kings on January 2,

Klimchuk was invited to the Flames’ 2015 training camp, but was assigned to the Flames AHL affiliate, the Stockton Heat for the 2015–16 season. Klimchuk made his NHL debut on February 19, 2018, against the Boston Bruins. The following day he was reassigned to the AHL.

Klimchuk played all the roles in Regina and became a top prospect for 2013 NHL Entry Draft. He was also ranked 25th by the NHL Central Scouting Bureau among North American skaters. Klimchuk credited his ability to play in both offensive and defensive situations for helping him develop a strong, two-way game. Klimchuk was selected by the Calgary Flames in the 28th round using the pick from the Jarome Iginla deal. On December 17, 2013, he signed a three year entry-level contract with Flames.

Klimchuk was born in Regina, Saskatchewan to Ukrainian parents. He grew up in Calgary and played minor hockey for the Calgary Buffaloes. In 2009-10, Klimchuk was the team’s captain in the Alberta Major Bantam Hockey League. He led his team to the Western Canadian Bantam championship final, where he settled for second. He was selected by the Western Hockey League’s Regina Pats in the fifth round of the 2010 WHL Bantam Draft. He played in five games for the Pats from 2010-11. Klimchuk was a full-time Pats player in 2011-12. He was a part of 67 games and scored 36 points to help Regina reach the WHL playoffs, for the first time since 2008. He was part of Team Pacific at 2012 World U-17 Hockey Challenge and finished second in team scoring with six goals in six games. He also played for Team Alberta at 2011 Canada Winter Games.

Klimchuk’s second season in WHL, 2012-13, saw him improve to 76 points. He also finished second in team scoring. He was a member of the Canadian under-18 national team. He was part of the Canadian gold medal-winning team at the 2012 Ivan Hlinka memorial Tournament. Klimchuk, who played on the top line along with Sam Reinhart (and Connor McDavid), scored eight points to lead Canada to a gold medal in the 2013 IIHF World U18 Championships.

During the 2018–19 season, on November 27, 2018, Klimchuk was traded by the Flames to the Toronto Maple Leafs in exchange for Andrew Nielsen. Klimchuk appeared in just 13 games with the Toronto Marlies, before he was traded by the Maple Leafs for the second time within the season to the Ottawa Senators in exchange for Gabriel Gagne on January 11, 2019.
