Mooji was born Tony Paul Moo Moo-Young, Port Antonio, Jamaica, in 1954. When he was just one years old, his mother immigrated to the UK with the windrush generation. His father and his maternal cousin raised him. The cousin became his father’s love and had many more children. Peter, Mooji’s older brother, went on to be a top Jamaican table tennis player. Mooji lost his father when he was eight years old. He was raised by an uncle and moved to London with his mother as a teenager to be closer to him.

Mooji was described as a “Global peddler metaphysical mumbo-jumbo”, in an article published in Indian magazine Outlook on 22 May 2017.

He met Papaji in India and attended his Satsangs. In 1994, his son died from pneumonia. He returned to London. Over a number of years, Mooji traveled to India to attend Papaji’s satsangs. He returned to Brixton, London each time to sell incense and chai, and to give away his “thoughts of the day”, which were rolled in straws from McDonald’s. After a group spiritual seekers became his students in 1999, he became a spiritual teacher and began producing books, CDs and videos about his teachings. Mooji stated that Tony Moo was now known as Mooji. Peter, Mooji’s brother, said that people have always followed him wherever ever he went.
