Monte Cook is one of the most popular and richest Writer who was born on January 29, 1968 in Watertown, United States. Cook is a professional game designer who has worked primarily in role-playing games since 1988. Cook began his career at Iron Crown Enterprises, where he was an editor and writer for their Rolemaster and Champions lines. Cook was for a while the editor of the Campaign Classics line of books that were part of the Hero System and Rolemaster lines. Cook was a freelancer for two years and a full-time designer for two years at Iron Crown Enterprises. During this period, Cook wrote the multi-genre setting Dark Space (1990), a fantasy /science-fiction/horror setting. Cook was appointed line editor for Hero System to replace Rob Bell, who left ICE back in 1990.
In mid-2004, he made controversy by selling only electronic d20 material through the DriveThruRPG.com shop. This store used a proprietary digital rights management encrypted PDF system. DriveThruRPG, which has done the same recently, forced him to accept customer pressure to sell his products in standard PDF form.
Shortly after the release of Ptolus, which Cook has often described as the culmination of his original ambitions for Malhavoc, he announced that he would be focusing on writing fiction and other unspecified forms of creative work, rather than role-playing games, for the foreseeable future. White Wolf and Goodman Games announced his final RPG books. Monte Cook’s World of Darkness, his own take on White Wolf’s modern horror setting, was released at Gen Con
- From Goodman Games is Dungeon Crawl Classics: #50, Vault of the Iron Overlord, which was also targeted for the same Gen Con release.
However, due to demand by fans reading his live journal, and posting their desires on the Malhavoc message boards, Monte Cook released one more RPG product in early 2008, The Book of Experimental Might. This was quickly followed by The Book of Experimental Might II: Bloody, Bold and Resolute.
Cook left Wizards of the Coast at the end of 2001. Cook’s Beyond the Veil (2001), was one of the later books of Atlas Games’ “Penumbra” line of d20 System books. Cook founded Malhavoc Press, an imprint of White Wolf’s Sword & Sorcery Studios in 2001. His first product was the d20 The Book of Eldritch Might (2001). The Book of Eldritch Might, the first book to be published as a PDF by a publisher, was published in 2001. It was a huge success, and it has been credited for demonstrating the viability in PDF publishing in the role- playing world. These and other early Malhavoc products were released in electronic format, but most have been published in print by White Wolf, Inc. Malhavoc Press collaborated with Fiery Dragon Productions in 2002 after Sword & Sorcery closed down. The majority of Fiery Dragon licenses were obtained from Malhavoc. Cook’s work for Malhavoc includes Arcana Unearthed, A Variant Players Handbook. Arcana Unearthed takes place in Cook’s “The Diamond Throne”, a setting dominated by giants.

After TSR was purchased by Wizards of the Coast, Cook became a senior designer, and was part of the team working on the D&D game’s third edition. Cook, Jonathan Tweet, and Skip Williams all contributed to the 3rd edition Players Handbook, Dungeon Master’s Guide, and Monster Manual, and then each designer wrote one of the books based on those contributions.
