Murphy was born in Wellington, New Zealand on 9 April 1994. Murphy fell 20m from a fifth-story balcony, resulting in her being in a coma. Murphy recalls that she was left with broken jaws in two places, a cut to her neck near the main artery, windpipe, and a tear in her triceps tendon. Murphy’s injuries proved too severe to recover from and she lost her right leg below her knee. She is currently enrolled in a Bachelor of Social Work at RMIT with honors. She volunteers with St Vincent de Paul’s youth program and is an ambassador for Share the Dignity. Murphy is currently in Brisbane, where she trains with paralympians Brendan Hall (coach Harley Connolly) and Lakeisha Patterson (coach Harley Connolly).

She competed in four events at the 2016 Rio Paralympics. Murphy was able to qualify for the final of the Women’s 400m S10 event and won a silver-medal. She also participated in the following events, but did not make it to the finals: Women’s 50m Freestyle S10, Women’s 100m Freestyles S10 and Women’s 100m Backstrokes S10.

She is a Victorian Institute of Sport scholarship holder in 2016 and trains at Melbourne Vicentre. She moved to the Gold Coast in 2016 to train with Southport Olympic and Glenn Baker, as well as a scholarship holder at the QAS. She finished the 2017 World Championships cancelled due to the earthquake in Mexico City. Monique moved to Brisbane in 2017 to continue her training with Harley Connolly, Lawnton Swim Club. In 2019, she moved to Burpengary Regional Aquatic Center to continue her training with Harley Connolly.
