Later, the networks “Labrystheia”, and NKL (“Network of Catholic Lesbians”) also emerged. Monika Barz represented the “Voters Initiative for Democracy” (Wahler– und Wahlerinnen Initiative für Demokratie and Umweltschutz) party from 1985 to 1993. She ran for election to the Bundestag in 2016 as a candidate for German Green Party. However, it was her first attempt at mainstream national politics and her name was not on the party list so she could not be elected.
She moved to Loccum, north of Hannover, and spent the next several years in adult education. She was involved in the German women’s movement. She co- founded the Women’s Refuge in Tubingen, and a Nienburg/Weser emergency helpline for women who have been assaulted. She joined forces with Ute Wild and Herta Leistner in 1985 to organize what was the first of a series of annual lesbian events at the Evangelical Academy, Bad Boll. This event continued until 1997.
Between 1995 and 2013 she served on the executive of the Equality Welfare Association (“Paritätische Wohlfahrtsverband”) for Baden-Württemberg: during 2014 and 2015 she served on its supervisory council. For her years of commitment and dedication she was honoured in 2016 with the “Golden pin-badge” (“Goldene Ehrennadel”).
