Mona Seif is one of the most popular and richest Geneticist who was born on March 12, 1986 in Cairo, Cairo Governorate, Egypt. Alaa Abd El Fathah, Seif’s brother, co-founded the Egyptian blog aggregator Manalaa. In 2005, he began documenting the Mubarak regime’s abuses. Alaa was detained at a demonstration in 2006, and held for 45 days. Mona and Manal organized an online campaign to release him. Seif’s younger sister Sanaa Seif has been an activist and protester as well.

Seif was named as a finalist in the Martin Ennals Award of Human Rights Defenders presented to Human Rights Watch in April 2013. HRW and Seif were both criticised for their pro-Palestinian stances. UN WATCH, a pro-Zionist group, claimed that Seif had tweeted support for violence through attacks on the Egypt–Israel–Jordan gas pipeline and invasion of the Israeli Embassy in Cairo. They also accused her of supporting missile attacks against Israel. Scott Long examined the accusations and denied that any of the 93,000 tweets showed support for violence.

She was a finalist in 2012 for the Front Line Award to Human Rights Defenders at Ris, which went ultimately to Razan Ghazzawi, a Syrian blogger.

Her mother is “known on the streets as brash and courageous, and has on numerous occasions faced down baton-wielding policemen with nothing but her scolding, scathing, booming voice and steely eyes”.
