Mohsen Sazegara Biography

Mohsen Sazegara is one of the most popular and richest Journalist who was born on January 5, 1955 in Tehran, Tehran Province, Iran. Sazegara studied at the Illinois Institute of Technology and Sharif University of Technology in Iran as an undergraduate student in the late 1970s. He was also a leader of student resistance to the Shah. He returned to Iran during the revolution of 1979 and was the founder of the Revolutionary Guard Corps. Sazegara was a political deputy to the prime minister’s cabinet, deputy minister of heavy industry, chairman of Iran’s Industrial Development and Renovation Organization, and vice-minister of planning and budget in the 1980s.

Sazegara was detained by the Ministry of Intelligence on Tuesday, February 18,

2003. He was held for five days during which time he took part in a hunger strike. The World Association of Newspapers (WAN) and World Editors Forum (WEF), which collectively represent more than 18,000 publications from 100 countries, protested his arrest. Amnesty International deemed him a prisoner for conscience and demanded his immediate release.

In March 2005, he left the UK to attend to a job opportunity in the United States at the Washington Institute for Near East Policy as a visiting scholar. Following a six-month term, he left the Washington Institute for Near East Policy for Yale University’s Center for International and Area Studies. By the end of the educational year he left Yale University to work at Harvard University as a researcher on Iran. As of February 2010, Sazegara has been “preaching” a “message of nonviolent action on a nightly basis,” through videos calling on Iranian dissidents to avoid fragmentation and unite behind former presidential candidate Mir Hossein Mousavi.

As of 2010, he was a visiting fellow at the George W. Bush Institute at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas.

Sazegara received his master’s degree from Iran’s Shahid Beheshti University. He then went on to finish his doctoral thesis at University of London 1996 on religious intellectuals, the Islamic revolution and religious intellectuals. Sazegara was a reformist journalist who published Jamee, Toos and Golestan-e-Iran after President Mohammad Khatami’s 1997 election. All of these publications were shut down by the hard-line regime.

He believed that reform was impossible given the current Iranian Constitution and launched a campaign for a referendum. Many students supported his efforts to amend the constitution. 2001 saw Dr. Sazegara become a presidential candidate. However, the Guardian Council rejected his candidacy, citing that his views were not in line with those of the Supreme Leader and the Guardian Council.

His reformist policies clashed with the Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei, eventually resulting in his arrest in early 2003. Following his release in August 2003, he moved to the United Kingdom for medical attention. He currently resides in the United States.
