Between 1994-95, Zairi helped set up the European Best Practice Benchmarking Award, for which he was appointed as Chairman.

Zairi started his career in the private sector, first as a production control coordinator. Later, he became a production manager. Since the mid 1980s, Zairi pioneered the Benchmarking and Best Practice Movements in the UK. Zairi was active in the field of Advanced Manufacturing Technology (AMT). He created an industrial network to exchange Best Practices and developed guidelines and methods that companies can use when considering the introduction complex technology-based innovations. From 1986-1989, the work was continued at Staffordshire Polytechnic.
