Mizuko Ito, Mizuko Ito, or Mimi Ito (Yi Teng Rui Zi, Ito Mizuko) is a Japanese cultural Anthropologist and Professor in Residence at University of California, Irvine’s Humanities Research Institute. Her primary professional interest is in young people’s use and enjoyment of media technology. She is interested in the changing ways digital media can affect relationships, identities, as well as communities.

Ito was awarded a MacArthur Foundation grant in 2006 to “observe children’s interactions with digital media to gain a sense about how they use the technology.” Ito’s work led to the creation of the Digital Media and Learning Research hub (located at the University of California Humanities Research Institute) and publication of two books, Hanging Out, Messing Around and Geeking Out and Engineering Play, A Cultural History of Children’s Software.

Ito’s professional interests are in connected learning and young people using media technology. She is interested in the changing ways digital media can affect relationships, identities, communities, and families. Ito co-edited Personal, Portable, Pedestrian, Mobile Phones in Japanese Life with Misa Matsuda (MIT Press, 2005). With Daisuke Okabe, Izumi Takuji as collaborators, she also studied otaku fan cultures. In January 2013, Ito and her collaborators, who include Kris Gutierrez, Sonia Livingstone, Bill Penuel, Jean Rhodes, Katie Salen, Juliet Schor, Julian Sefton-Green, and S. Craig Watkins, released Connected Learning: An Agenda for Research and Design, a synthesis report of the Connected Learning Research Network.
