Misha Mahowald is one of the most popular and richest American neuroscientist who was born on January 12, 1963 in Minneapolis, Minnesota, United States. Michelle Anne Mahowald, born January 12, 1963 and died December 26, 1996 was an American computational neuroscientist who worked in the new field of neuromorphic Engineering. She was inducted into Women in Technology International Hall of Fame in 1996 for her contributions to the development of the Silicon Eye, and other computational systems. She committed suicide at the age of 33.

Mahowald, 33 years old, died in Zurich on the 31st of June 1996.

The Misha Mahowald Prize for Neuromorphic Engineering was created to recognize outstanding achievements in the field of neuromorphic engineering and was first awarded in 2016.

The silicon retina utilized analog electrical circuits to imitate the biological functions of rod, cone, and other nonphotoreceptive cells within the retina. It was not only a novel and useful device to restore sight to blind people, but also one of the most innovative feats in electrical and biological engineering. Mahowald was a notable female engineer, and this remarkable feat of engineering earned her a reputation. Her work is considered to be the “best attempt” to create a stereoscopic visual system. In 1992 she was awarded a doctorate of computational neuroscience. Her inventions of the silicon retina, the silicon neuron, and four patents, along with the Clauser Prize, for her dissertation, earned her articles in Scientific American and Nature. Her dissertation was later revised [2] and published in book form.
