Aron Keith Barbey (born on the 6th of January 1977) is an American cognitive neuroscientist who studies the neural basis of intelligence in humans. Barbey holds the position of Emanuel Donchin Professorial Scholar of Psychology, and is an Associate Professor in Psychology, Neuroscience, and Bioengineering at the University of Illinois. He is the director of the Decision Neuroscience Laboratory at the Beckman Institute for Advanced Science and Technology and the founding director of the Center for Brain Plasticity at the Beckman Institute, where he is the leader of the Intelligence, Learning, and Plasticity (ILP) Initiative.

He has employed both traditional lesion techniques and functional magnetic resonance (fMRI) methods to gain a better understanding of the structure of neural networks and the relationship between it and intelligence. His research team studies the impact on cognition neuroscience (including TDCS), physical fitness, as well as nutritional interventions on the health of brains and intelligence throughout the life span. In the year 2019 Barbey was given the Mensa Foundation Prize for his work in neuroscience researching human intelligence.

In 2011, Barbey became a member of be the director of the College of Applied Health Sciences at the University of Illinois, and was appointed an institute Affiliate for the Beckman Institute for Advanced Science and Technology. By 2012, he had become Director of the Decision Neuroscience Laboratory at the Beckman Institute. In the year 2018 the Center for Brain Plasticity at the Beckman Institute was formed, under the direction by co-directors Aron Barbey, and Neal J. Cohen, who are the leaders of the centre’s Intelligence, Learning, and Plasticity (ILP) Initiative.

Aron Barbey graduated with the B.A. in Psychology from University of Texas at Dallas in 1999. He then earned received a Ph.D. in Psychology from Emory University, Atlanta, Georgia in 2007.
