Misha B was misha Amber Bryan, born on February 10, 1992 to Florence Bryan and an unidentified father. She is Jamaican-born. Their maternal aunt Lily raised Misha B (and her older sister Monique) from three months of age. Misha B said that she will always consider Lily her mum. She is not related to her birth mother. She was a wonderful mother and carried me all those months. But, I still respect her.

Misha B was introduced to the music industry in 2011 when she appeared on the eighth series of The X Factor UK. She sang Aretha Franklin’s “Respect” in her first audition. The Voice described her performance as “confident” as well as “show-stopping”, and a promising sign for Misha B’s future. She was noted for her “Lauryn-like” rap-singing style and was mentored in the competition by Kelly Rowland, an American recording artist. She finished fourth. According to a variety of sources, including bluesandsoul.com, Digital Spy, The Daily Telegraph and The Daily Telegraph Misha B is considered one of the most talented and exciting talents ever to emerge from a talent contest. BBC 1xtra praised her “show-stopping performances” and called her a “break from traditional X Factor contestants”. The Daily Telegraph reviewed the series and voted her performance of Rolling in the Deep (Adele), as the highlight. They said she “oozed star quality right from the beginning… Like a 21st-century Grace Jones or a urban Lady Gaga, the teenager looked like a pop star already.” Misha B, who was in the bottom two with Sophie Habibis in week four, was saved. Voting statistics showed that Habibis received more votes then Misha B, so if the result was not resolved, Habibis would have been saved. Misha B was again in the bottom two in week six. This time, she was paired with Kitty Brucknell. Brucknell, however, received more votes than Misha B, so if the result was not resolved, Brucknell could have been saved. Misha B placed second in the public vote and received 22.5%, which earned her a place for the quarter-final. Misha B, who was in the bottom two of the quarter-final along with Janet Devlin, was saved. Voting statistics showed that Devlin had received more votes than Misha, so if the result was tied, Devlin would have advanced to the semi-final, and Misha would have been eliminated. Misha B placed fourth overall in the competition. Tulisa and Louis Walsh both accused Misha B of making “mean remarks” during the third live performance. Misha was also accused of being a backstage bully. Both accusers apologized the next day, but no evidence was presented to back up either of these allegations. Misha B was defended by her fellow judges and contestants during and after the show. Judge Gary Barlow stated that he believed Misha B was unable to win the competition because of the wrongful accusations. Bryan asked her about her experience with X Factor. She replied, “I’m 100 percent grateful for the platform it provided me…but it is not for the faint-hearted lol.” It’s entertainment for TV, so you have to remember that. “Things are said that are beyond our control as contestants. I was not asked any questions. I was simply accused.

Misha B headlined Manchester Pride on 27 August with crowds of 150,000 to celebrate LGBT culture. 21 October to 7 November 2012, Misha B toured as Nicki Minaj’s support act on the United Kingdom leg of the Pink Friday: Reloaded Tour.

Regarding her own releases Home Run is a fusion of multiple genres – R&B, hip-hop, dance, pop, soul, reggae, drum and bass, combined with Misha’s ‘soulful vocals’. Do You Think of Me is an up- tempo R&B track that fuses urban and dance music, with its “90s club-meets- tribal-flavour”. While her third release fused R&B with reggae, pop, drum & bass elements. In separate interviews she has said “one thing that’s the same in all my songs is that drum beat, that kick” and “drums and rhythm are a real priority to me”. Misha B frequently performs covers – amongst them in September 2012, she covered Alicia Keys’ track “Girl on Fire” described by one critic as that “awkward moment when someone sings your new song better than you”, the following month she covered “Diamonds” (Rihanna song). She also covered Hip Hop hits – Jay Z and Kanye West’s “No Church in the Wild”, and in July 2014 Tupac’s 1998 hit Do for Love “breathing harmony into the song with a refreshingly unadorned approach that’s transcended by her relentless passion and drive for self-expression.” Bryan has said that while soul was the ‘foundation’, she loved combining singing and rapping and is noted for adding her own raps to covers – “how do you make Aretha Franklin’s ‘Respect’ even more sassy? with a rap, of course!” Bryan also included rap breaks in her covers of Adele’s “Rolling in the Deep” and Cyndi Lauper”Girls Just Want To Have Fun” while she was on The X Factor. and Drake’s “Started from the Bottom”, again Misha B “drops her own lyrics on the song” “reflecting on the harsh realities of her childhood” – she spits: ‘Mummy was a crack fiend, I was crack born, Daddy never has been Daddy at all’ and reflects on her musical career post X Factor.
