Beginning with an anti-dj performance on the famous Boiler Room back in 2012, (along with Obi Blanche), the journalist-turned-musician, Anika has shown a veering tendency towards the underground club scene, frequently spinning at some of the world’s most renowned venues.

Anika later formed the band Exploded View, based in Mexico City, along with local musician / producers, Martin Thulin, Hugo Quezada and Amon Melgarejo who released their self-titled debut album on Sacred Bones Records in 2016. They later released a follow up E.P on the same label entitled ’Summer Came Early’, which was said to be a comment on global warming, in November 2017.

A number of songs from Anika have found success digitally through iTunes. “End of the World” reached the top spot at seventy-eight on the iTunes Japan Top 100 Alternative Songs as well as “Yang Yang” peaked at sixty-four according to the iTunes Spain Top 100 Alternative Songs. Anika was selected by the band Portishead for their performance at the ATP I’ll Be Your Mirror festival that they co-curated in July 2011 in the London’s Alexandra Palace and in September 2011 at Asbury Park, New Jersey.

Geoff Barrow with editor John Minton produced the music promotional video for Anika’s cover version of “Yang Yang.” The track was later made available in the form of “Free MP3 of the Day” on Spinner. When she decided for the cover on the album Anika stated, “I was awed by the way the lyrics were sounded, and as a former politics student and journalist in the field I was convinced that it could make an excellent version. Yoko Ono is renowned for her political beliefs, but I believe there is a dark aspect in the songs that she of the song had not explored fully. That’s where we came in. …” Drowned in Sound. which included “Yang Yang” as one of its Top singles of the year in 2010.

Before beginning performing, Anika was a political journalist who was able to split her time traveling between Berlin as well as Bristol, England. She was introduced to music producer Geoff Barrow (of Portishead) who was in search of female vocalists to work with his group Beak. Anika joined the group in the studio and recorded nine tracks which included a cover version song of Yoko Ono’s “Yang Yang” in 12 days, with no overdubs. The album, Anika, was released by Barrow’s Invada imprint in Europe as well as by Stones Throw Records in the U.S. and Japan in October of 2010. Anika was praised by modern critics. According to the review aggregation of Metacritic Anika scored an average score of 65/100. The album also contained songs by “Terry” by Twinkle, “End of the World” by Skeeter Davis, “Masters of War” by Bob Dylan, and “I Go to Sleep” by Ray Davies.

She is also known as a DJ, hosts a radio program on BCR – Berlin Community Radio (Do Not Go Gentle,) is seen and heard in experimental cinema and collaborates with a variety of artists and musicians among them Jandek, Shackleton (Woe To The Septic Heart!), Michael Rother (Neu!), Dave Clarke (Skint), Andreas Reihse of Kreidler, T.Raumschmiere (Sleeping Pills and Habits), Doireann O’Malley, Ricardo Domeneck, Stine Omar / Max Boss (EASTER), Phillip Geist or Yann Tiersen.
