Two years later, she moved to Thailand’s Chiang Mai University where she taught English. She was deeply influenced by the three years she spent living in Chiang Mai. Ho, along with her students, spent many periods living in and working in the villages nearby as part of an ongoing student movement to reduce rural poverty. Ho discovered the emotional world of the children and women in the villages while the student leaders were busy organizing peasants to a political party in their quest for democracy.
Select works by Minfong Ho were translated into Thai and French, Japanese, Koreans, Tagalog, Tagalog, French, Thai, Chinese, Japanese and Korean. Sing to the Dawn, one of these works, was also made into a musical for the 1996 Singapore Arts Festival.
Minfong Ho is an award-winning Chinese–American writer. Her works frequently deal with the lives of people living in poverty in Southeast Asian countries. Despite being fiction, her stories are always set against the backdrop of real events, such as the student movement in Thailand in the 1970s and the Cambodian refugee problem with the collapse of the Khmer Rouge regime at the turn of the 1970s and 1980s. Her simple yet touching language and her optimistic themes have made her writing popular among children as well as young adults.
Ho had her first child in 1986. It was a boy. Finally, after a decade of being back in Thailand, Ho began to write fiction again. Rice without Rain was the result. She was caught up in political winds that swept across Thailand when a group from Bangkok came to encourage landless farmers to join a rent resistance movement. Jinda’s discovery that the peasant classes were just pawns of the ongoing political tug-of war and her quest to find her own way in life was set against the same historical backdrop as Ho.

Ho was however present at the massacre of student protesters on October 6, 1976 in a military coup de’etat that restored military rule to the kingdom. She didn’t stay for long in such circumstances. John Value Dennis, Jr., an internationally-oriented agricultural policy person she had met at Cornell, was her husband. Ho then left Cornell to pursue a master’s degree in creative writing and worked as an English literature teacher assistant. In 1980, she also worked in relief at the Thai-Cambodian frontier.
Ho returned to Singapore in 1983 as the writer-in residence at the National University of Singapore. Ho is often referred to as a “local author” in Singapore. Her works were selected to be taught in English literature classes at lower secondary schools. Ho lives with her family in Ithaca since 1990. She has also presented at writing workshops in middle and high school in the United States as well as international schools in Thailand, Indonesia, Thailand and Malaysia.
After the birth of her third and last child Ho shifted her focus to writing books for children. Collaborating with Saphan Ros, executive director of the Cambodian Association of Greater Philadelphia, she published two books on traditional Cambodian folktales, The Two Brothers and Brother Rabbit: A Cambodian Tale. In the meantime, she even translated sixteen Tang poems into English and compiled them into a picture book titled Maples in the Mist: Children’s Poems from the Tang Dynasty. In 2004, she returned to writing for more mature readers with Gathering the Dew, a story of how a young Cambodian girl who lost her sister during the Khmer Rouge regime learnt to reconcile with life’s harsh realities and live on.
