Millard Hampton was educated at Silver Creek High School, San Jose, California. He was coached by Bobby Poynter (former San Jose State star). He graduated in 1974. The 200 m record was set at 20.8 seconds. He won the CIF California State Meet title in Silver Creek in 1974, a feat that he had not been able to achieve with his father.
Next, Hampton attended San Jose City College (SJCC), where he was coached and supervised by Bert Bonanno and Bobby Poynter. Hampton was a member of the 1976 Olympic Trials. He also won silver in the 200 meter and ran the third leg for the winning American 4×100 metre relay team.
Another Silver Creek graduate, Andre Phillips won the Gold medal in the 400 metres hurdles at the 1988 Summer Olympics, making for a rare instance when two Olympic Gold medalists have come from the same high school. The high school website claims eight schools. The school has honored both by hosting the “Hamption Phillips Classic” named in their honor.
