1988. He currently plays for the Edmonton Oilers in the National Hockey League (NHL). The New York Islanders drafted Koskinen 31st in the NHL Entry Draft

Koskinen made the NHL debut against the Toronto Maple Leafs on February 8, 2011. The Islanders lost 5-3. Two days later, he won his first NHL win in a shootout victory of 4-3 over the Montreal Canadiens.

Koskinen has represented Finland in the World Championships in 2014 and 2016. In 2016, he was included in the All-Star Team and was named the best goaltender.

On 1 May 2018, Koskinen agreed to terms on a one year, $2.5 million contract with the Edmonton Oilers in the NHL, which was formalised 1 July 2018. On 21 January 2019, the Oilers signed Koskinen to a three-year, $13.5 million extension, carrying an annual cap hit of $4.5 million.

Koskinen signed with KalPa on 12 November 2011 when he returned to Finland.

Koskinen signed an entry-level contract for three years with the New York Islanders on 13 July 2009. Koskinen was assigned as a player to the Bridgeport Sound Tigers affiliate of the Islanders in the 2009-10 season. This was his first North American season. After two Sound Tigers appearances, Koskinen suffered a torn hip labrum which required surgery. He was out of action for the remainder of the season. After four months of rehabilitation, Koskinen was back to his health and was reassigned the Utah Grizzlies to play the rest of the season. He helped the Grizzlies to the conference semifinals in six starts and was then reassigned to the secondary Islanders affiliate, the Utah Grizzlies, for the remainder of the year.

After playing in the Finnish SM-liiga, Koskinen was drafted 31st by the New York Islanders. Koskinen was both the first Finnish goalie selected in the draft and the first to be taken. He was the NHL Central Scouting Bureau’s second-ranked European goalie before the draft.

In 2013, Koskinen left Finland to play for Sibir Novosibirsk in the KHL. Part way through the 2014–15 season he was traded to SKA Saint Petersburg for fellow goaltender Alexander Salák. Koskinen and his team went on to win the Gagarin Cup, the KHL championship trophy in April 2015 and 2017.
