Jokela, who had served as team captain for three seasons at HIFK, signed a two year contract to return to the role of captain at fellow Finnish Liiga club KalPa. After serving as team captain for both years, he signed a two-year contract with EC VSV (EBEL) in May 2016 and headed to Austria.
Jokela was on the Finnish roster for the 2008 World Championships. He also represented Finland at the Euro Hockey Tour several times.

Jokela began his ice hockey career in junior hockey with KalPa. He was selected 96th in the 1998 NHL Entry Draft by New Jersey Devils. Jokela played the entire season with the AHL Albany River Rats. He was then traded to the Vancouver Canucks in exchange for Steve Kariya. In 2002-03, Jokela played his first NHL game.
Jokela signed with HPK after spending another year with the Canucks’ AHL affiliate Manitoba Moose. Jokela was elected team captain in 2005-06, when the team won SM-liiga. He signed a three year contract with Jokerit in April 2007. After his second season with Jokerit, he switched to KHL side HC Dynamo Minsk. After the 2009-10 season spent with Minsk he moved to KHL team HC Dynamo Minsk and joined SHL side Timra IK in the 2010-11 season. He began a three-year stint in the Finnish Liiga with HIFK.
