Mikhail Spokoyny is one of the most popular and richest American scientist who was born on February 7, 1955 in Odessa, Odessa Oblast, Ukraine. His father Yury Efimovich Spookoyny (1929–2009) was a professor at Odessa Polytechnic Institute. His mother, Irma Borisovna (Brain-Litwin), was a high-school French teacher.

Mikhail Spokoyny immigrated to the United States in 2001. He was granted citizenship in 2009. Before he was granted citizenship, the spelling of his name was Michael Spokoiny. He speaks Russian and English fluently.

In 2013 Mikhail Spokoyny was appointed CEO and Managing Director of the Aerospace (Asgardia) International Research Center (AIRC) in Vienna, Austria. The center publishes the space magazine Room — The Space Journal and conducts research in different areas for the space industry. In that position, Mr. Spokoyny participated in the AIRC’s main project, the formation of Asgardia the Space Nation, that was announced in Paris, France on October 12, 2016.

Mikhail Spokoyny graduated from Odessa Technological Institute in 1977. He worked for Kvant, a Soviet production and research institute. There he participated in Monolit, the thermostabilization Lenin’s body at the Mausoleum. This was one of the major projects of the institute. He was the Science Director of the Institute of New Technologies of the Russian Academy of Science from 1989 to 1993. He held various executive positions in IT companies from 1993 to 2001. He founded several startups, including SOTEL, Ltd.
